We wear many different hats while working on a client project. As the designer, we really do care about a strong graphic presentation. As the coders (or code manager), we care about every promised function of the site working correctly. And as the search engine optimizer, we mostly care about the site copy that clients might (or might not!) provide.

I remember sitting in Study Hall back in the early 70’s, waiting for the Internet to happen. Unknown to me, it WAS happening, in secret, for the Department of Defense and a small group of eggheads in a few universities.

There’s an old story about a tech support phone call from a new computer user who was having problems getting their brand new desktop PC to start up.
The tech went through a checklist of items with the user, trying to solve the problem. After trying everything the tech could think of, there was still no joy – the machine would not ‘boot.’
So the tech advised the user to unplug the machine, pack it up, and send it back for service.
“Oh, was I supposed to plug it in?” responded the user.

When I built my first website in 1996, promoting the site consisted of sending out a mass emailing announcing the ‘launch’! Soon enough, the site appeared in AltaVista search. We submitted the url to various web directories and that was it. The site was up!
Times have changed, and since then millions more websites have been added to the world wide web.
