The web was once a DREAM de-centralized platform for everyone to have equal opportunity to have a their say. And maybe sell a little merch.
Anyone could have a website where they could make posts on their blog and prove they were just as insightful as anybody else And sell a little merch.
All this was before any real hacking of a website had happened. Want to leave a Comment on my Post? Sure, go ahead. No need to prove you are HUMAN. I accept alien viewpoints.
Then, suddenly, hackers saw all these sites as excellent spots for Graffiti Makeovers!

These hackers made bloggers abandon their beloved ‘123456’ and ‘password’ passwords.
Hacking became auditioning for that safe & secure corporate job. Career advancement.
So, little by little, most of these bloggers got tired of all the crap involved in running an independent blog.
The bloggers took their posting habit to centralized environments where they would have more PROTECTION, and more AUDIENCE. I hardly remember the names …MySpace…Blogger…FriendFace… Oops, that one was fictitious.
Anyway the bloggers gave up their independence for convenience.
And, things proceeded to get even more convenient. SOCIAL MEDIA ate the competition and made the choice much more binary.
SOCIAL MEDIA didn’t send this note. At least there’s no evidence. But it read “We HaVe y0uR FamiLy & FrIenDs & aUdiEnCe. Join now if you don’t want something bad to happen to them.”
It was the final blow to being independent. The final acceptance of CONVENIENCE.
Then when the corporations got you on convenience, they proceeded to get you on SECURITY.
The web became a dangerous place. It was not a good idea to wander off the SAFE PLACES the corporations had made JUST FOR YOU.
The safe places where a small number of corporations could profit off your railing against the SYSTEM.
They let you know when you had wandered into DANGER and then insisted all websites have something called a SECURE CERTIFICATE to prove they were benign.
Insisted became REQUIRED pretty quickly.
Then [REDACTED] decided that ALL websites sending emails had to have more proof they were actually sending these emails & or they wouldn’t deliver the mail to the mailboxes of their customers.
They’d just trash those emails like ballots in Dem districts of Republican-led states.
The ultimate goal of these SECURITY measures was two-fold.
- To prevent site owners from using their own website
- To keep the real hackers laughing
Meanwhile, hackers kept on auditioning.

Excellent post. Thanks. Now, um, what’s your password?
Yeah. the devolution of the web is disheartening (trademark), so thanks for cheering me up.
Why, of course! All Your Passwords Are “BelongToUs.”

Taking profits and raising barriers to community–having to punch in numbers, then try to reach a human being, then recite, rinse, and repeat ev-er-y g-dd-n time I have a phone call with a company that I pay money to…. No one will ever pay for a survey that asks, Have you ever had a bad time with an automated answering system? I bet about 99 percent of us would respond in the positive. Companies do not want to acknowledge this–the automation has made profits for them.
hey tom, this was an excellent post thanks so much for this..
